“Can We Talk?” was formed by two friends and a therapist, after recognizing the need “seasoned” (ages 55+) Black women have for support as they journey through life.

Meet the Co-Coordinator

Born and raised in Pittsburgh. Attended American University and Point Park University majoring in Government and Public Administration. I spent over 20 years in Program Development and Management with a non-profit re-entry program for parolees from county, state, and federal corrections for both men and women.

During the Pandemic mental health became close and personal. I lost friends not only to COVID but suicide due to the isolation. I also struggled and found there were few outlets or areas for help for women of color and especially for those of us at a seasoned age. Working in healthcare now, it quickly became apparent there were no informal services that would help address the stigma of Mental Health in our community.

Re-uniting with an old friend who had returned to the area opened the door for the development of “Can We Talk?” Working on this project has become a passion as well as a life saver.

“Can We Talk?” has been a wonderful group. There is usually a topic, but sometimes it depends on how the group flows. We talk, cry, laugh, hug, encourage each other, and let’s not forget the food. I look forward to the meetings once a month and will miss everyone when our time is over.”

“As black women, we need to be able to share our concerns with each other and support each other at the same time. We need to be able to talk about our life experiences, knowing that we are not alone.  I believe that workshops such as this can help us learn and grow, as well as free us.”

“Sometimes you don’t know what you need until it's presented to you. The safe haven of sharing your pains, joys, confusion, and experiences in a supportive and non-judgmental environment helps ease the daily struggles experienced. That is what “Can We Talk” has done for me.”

We have more in common than we realize.

So, can we talk?
